Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) is an important measure used internationally to improve patient safety and quality of care in a hospital. The HSMR is a ratio that adjusts for factors that affect in -hospital mortality rates, such as patient age, sex, diagnosis, length of stay, comorbidities and admission status and thus, allows comparison of achievement be made between hospitals. HSMR essentially compares the actual number of deaths in a hospital with the expected national average. The ratio provides an index to assess hospital’s performance and helps identify areas for improvement to reduce preventable hospital deaths.
Business Objectives (BO):
BO1: To monitor the pattern and trend of in -hospital mortality over time for a broad range of disease groups by hospital types and individual hospital.
BO2: To correlate and standardize mortality ratio for meaningful comparison between hospitals
